Follow Matthew Williamson’s Lead!

After Matthew Williamson’s show at London Fashion Week there was one thing on the lips and minds of everyone and that was evening wear.  The designer showcased an exquisite range of slinky and girly evening wear.

The range features a number of styles including asymmetrical cocktail dresses in a selection of bright and vibrant colours and in a number of Matthew Williamson’s trademark patterns.    The combination of cocktail dresses, high waisted skirts and finely tailored jackets left everyone present at the show gushing, including Sienna Miller and Olivia Palmero.  However, it wasn’t just the A list celebrities present at the show who were left in awe of the designers fine creations.  Rather the media and the public have been left lusting after many of the creations showcased during the event too.

So with so much talk about evening wear I thought it was only right to include a post about the much talked about topic.  As we gradually move into spring the wedding invitations and invites to evening parties are likely to start piling up.  Such occasions require some sort of formal attire and often lead to a great deal of confusion and annoyance about what wear.  However this should not be the case.

Cocktail dresses are the perfect evening wear for warmer evenings, or for summer weddings.  Why not follow the example set by Matthew Williamson and opt for an asymmetrical number?  This will show that you are aware of trends and differentiate your ensemble from everyone else’s.

The Little Black Dress is always a safe option and helps to slim the figure so is ideal for those who are conscious of their weight and want to appear slimmer.  Similarly the LBD is also a great choice for those on a budget as it is a timeless classic and can be worn time and again.  However, for those who are a bit more adventurous why not opt for brightly coloured evening wear?  This will chase away the winter blues and add a splash of colour and warmth to any occasion.

The options are endless when it comes to evening wear with so many styles on offer in a wide range of colours and patterns, so it should be easy to find something which suits your body shape and your needs for the occasion.

The More Realistic Mannequins are Unveiled

Debenhams, the iconic British department store, is now set to use size 16 mannequins within their stores.  Just last Friday Debenhams unveiled the use of these curvier and more natural looking mannequins in their Oxford Street store located in central London.

However, the use of such mannequins is not a permanent feature and their future presence within Debenhams cannot be guaranteed.  Rather the implementation of size 16 models is merely a trial and ultimately their fate lies in the hands of the consumer.  Debenhams are very interested in gauging consumer opinion when it comes to this matter.  Consequently the mannequins which have are now being used have signs positioned next to them which say “I’m a size 16 do you want to see more of me?”  Whether the mannequins are maintained within the store is entirely attributable to the consumer response to their usage.  If consumers respond positively to their use throughout the department store then it is probable they will remain as a prominent feature.

At the present time these mannequins are being used within Debenhams’ shop windows in order to promote the range of clothes designed by Ben de Lisi for Principles.  The use of such mannequins is thought to be a move which challenges the stereotypical and traditional views which are all too often applied to the fashion industry.  In fact the majority of mainstream fashion stores, with the exception of specialist plus size fashion shops, use size 8 or 10 mannequins, this is despite the fact that the average British woman is a size 14-16.  What’s more Debenhams have revealed that 42% of its women’s wear sales come from size 14 and 16 clothing.

Given that size 14 and 16 women contribute greatly to Debenhams’ sales it seems only right that these women see a mannequin which better reflects their body type and moreover provides them with a fairer reflection of what certain clothes look like on a size 16 body.  Furthermore, given that Debenhams sells a wide range of plus size fashion, with some items available up to a size 26 it seems only right that more voluptuous mannequins are used.

Stylish Hoisery to suit Everyone

Whilst recently shopping online I came across a great website that I thought I should share with all of my wonderful readers.  The online store in question is none other than My Tights and I have to admit that I  had heard the name before but had never actually visited the website.  However, I cannot urge you enough to visit this website, it is absolutely fantastic and almost certain to cure all of your hosiery woes.

The My Tights website offers everything from the traditional black 40 denier tights to the ultimate in fashion hosiery that any self respecting fashionista would be proud to be seen in.  They even stock the ever popular mock tights which are a great alternative to hold ups.  They are not only extremely practical especially during these winter months but also slightly sexier than a traditional pair of tights.  For those of you who are unaware of mock tights- let me explain.  Mock tights are as you imagine a pair of tights but they give off the illusion that you are in fact wearing hold ups or stockings.  What’s more this style is becoming increasingly more popular with the likes of Lily Allen and Katie Perry, to name but a few choosing to wear them.  So it was great to see that MyTights have an abundance of different mock tights on sale in a variety of sizes.

In fact the site takes a refreshing approach to hosiery shopping, which is all too often seen as a mundane and boring task.  However My Tights really livens things up and reassures us there is more to hosiery than just opaque or woolly tights.  Rather it shows us that there is a world of fashion hosiery out there so like I said go along and check it out I think you will be really surprised.

Has Victoria Beckham Really Adopted a New Style??

She is probably most famed for her impeccable style and taste when it comes to fashion.  However, it seems that perhaps Victoria Beckham has undergone somewhat of a transformation in the style department recently.

The star has always been well turned out and almost always spotted wearing well fitting ensembles complete with towering heels.  However, Mrs. Beckham was spotted recently in a London airport without her trademark high heels.  Victoria has barely ever been spotted without her heels and it has even been noted in the past that she even wears her heels to carry out menial tasks, such as taking her children to school, when most women would opt for a pair of sensible and comfortable shoes.  However, Victoria defied critics who said it was ridiculous to wear heels to perform such tasks by continuing to wear them at every possible opportunity.

So it came as something as a shock when photographs of the style icon wearing flat pumps were sent across the world.  Although the fashionista still looked as sophisticated as ever in her stylish mini dress with flat shoes, complete with her signature sunglasses, it still came as a shock.

Furthermore, just last week the queen of style was spotted looking definitively more relaxed and laid back in her sense of style when she was spotted with her three young sons wearing yet again another pair of flats.  Whilst out and about in LA, the star was pictured wearing a pair of casual jeans and a black vest with a black baseball cap and a pair of sunglasses.  This is a far cry from the style guru’s usual style but that is not to say that it wasn’t a refreshing change to see the star present a much more relaxed appearance.  Although it seems that the star’s style hasn’t changed that much as one both occasions he has been spotted wearing oversized, dark sunglasses, a key element of her signature look.

So whether this fresh faced look is to set to be a permanent feature it remains to be seen.  However, if her recent interview and photo shoot with Glamour magazine, where he poses with puppies portraying her softer side, is anything to go by then it would appear that this look will around for a while.  Although given that she is a slave to fashion I doubt she will be able to stay away from her stunning collection of designer heels for too long!

Kate Moss for Longchamp

Kate Moss is no stranger to the designer world, not only is she famous for wearing some of the most coveted pieces of designer fashion available but in recent times she has also turned her hand to designing clothes herself.  So it should come as no surprise that the model turned designer has now designed a range of bags for the illustrious and luxurious French label Longchamp.

Despite Ms Moss’ design experience this is the first time that the model has ever designed a range of bags.  The collection which consists of 12 different bag designs can be categorised into three distinctive themes, those being “Rock ‘n’ Casual”, “Rock ‘n’ Travel” and “Rock ‘n’ Glam”.  Her collaboration with Longchamp entitled “Kate Moss for Longchamp” was launched on Wednesday in Paris, at the Ritz no less.  What’s more as you would expect the fashion elite was out in force to help the model celebrate the launch of her collection.  The guest list extended to some 700 guests which included the designer Giamattista Valli, the Editor in Chief of French Vogue Carnie Roitfeld and the former muse of Yves Saint, Laurent Loulou de la Falaise.

Kate Moss is famed for her incredible style and impeccable taste when it comes to fashion and true to form the trend setter was beautifully turned out when she arrived at the launch event on Wednesday.  The model opted for a black lace Valentino dress which she combined with a white Valentino jacket and of she course compeleted her look with a clutch bag from her new collection.

Although this is the first time she has designed anything for the brand it is not the first time that she has worked with Longchamp.  Rather she has been the face of the brand for several seasons now and clearly the pairing works as Ms Moss says “I’ve been working with Longchamp for a while, it just works.”   It is expected that the range of bags will be as well received as the collections of clothes which has designed for Topshop.  Kate was signed up by Topshop boss Sir Philip Green to design a range for the high street store in spring, 2007 and since then her collections have gone from strength to strength.

Judgement of the style icon’s bag collection for Longchamp will have to be reserved until 11th February, when the range is launched in Britain.  The collection will be launched in the Longchamp boutique on Bond Street, London and exclusively at “the Wonder Room” in Selfridges, London.  However, it seems when it comes to designing and anything fashion related Kate has the Midas touch so it is probable that this collection will be a huge hit that she can add to her already long string of successes.

And the Award for Best Dressed Goes to…

So we have been inundated with a number of awards ceremonies recently on both sides of the Atlantic, which naturally sounds the fashion alarm for many.  We started off with the Golden Globes in the United States which were swiftly followed by the National Television Awards here in the UK and then all attention was diverted back to the States for the Screen Actor Guild Awards.  Meanwhile we have the Brit Awards to look forward to in the coming weeks and the Oscars not long after that.  So I think it would be fair to say that this time of year is the highlight in many a fashion lover’s calendar.  With so many celebrities and so many designer labels all in the same place at the same time what’s not to love?

So let’s start with the Golden Globes and it seems that almost every woman made an impact but in some cases for all the reasons. However, when it comes to style there were a few clear winners in the form of Emily Blunt and Penelope Cruz.  Whilst Emily decided to add a splash of colour to the event by wearing a beautiful, strapless, pale pink Dolce and Gabbana dress Penelope decided to wow the crowds in a stunning black Armani Prive dress.  Although their dresses were at polar extremes from one another both made an equally big impression and ensured both ladies hit the mark in the style department.  What’s more both women kept their accessories to a minimum and let their dresses speak for themselves.  Both Emily and Penelope simply wore a few statement pieces of jewellery, which complemented their ensembles beautifully without detracting from them.

Whilst the Golden Globes saw the Hollywood elite turn out in abundance the National Television Awards saw the who’s who of British television arrive in their droves.  Furthermore I think it would be fair to say that us Brits were just as excited about seeing what the stars of the small screen in Britain wore as we were about finding out what Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Aniston wore at the Golden Globes.  However, there was one person who stole the show at this year’s NTAs and that was none other than Dannii Minogue.  All eyes were on the starlet after she recently announced that she was pregnant and she had to live up to given the outfits she wore throughout X factor if truth be told she did not disappoint.  In the fact the mum to be looked absolutely stunning in the black and white striped, prom style, vintage dress that she wore along with a pair of killer red heels!  Although it should be said that other dresses which made an impact on the night were those worn by Tess Daley and Amanda Holden, with both women oozing class and sophistication.

However, fast forward to the weekend and we saw the Hollywood A listers congregate again for another ceremony, this time it was the Screen Actor Guild Awards.  This time it was the cast of the film Nine, which includes actresses Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson, Penelope Cruz and Marion Cotillard, who caught everyone’s eye.  Nicole Kidman, whose outfit has appeared to catch people’s attention for all the wrong reasons, wore a floor length, strapless, Aztec inspired dress.  However, Nicole fashion faux pas was more than compensated for by her Nine co-stars.  Whilst Marion opted for a shorter length, white Elie Saab Haute Couture dress complete with feathers around the hem Penelope wore a calf length, shimmering black dress by L’Wren Scott, which hugged her curves beautifully.  Meanwhile Kate Hudson choose to wear an exquisite backless, floor length, white Emilio Pucci gown which showed offer the star’s beautiful figure perfectly, some might even say her gown was the dress of the evening.

So with such high standards having already been set it would seem that the stars on both sides of the Atlantic are really going to have to raise the bar when it comes to future awards ceremonies such as the Brit awards and the Oscars.  However with stars with impeccable taste such as Fearne Cotton and Penelope Cruz likely to be in attendance at the respective awards ceremonies I doubt very much we will be left disappointed.

New Hair for the New Year

So with the arrival of the New Year comes the arrival of all the resolutions that people intend to keep throughout the year.  For many this involves giving up a particular habit such as smoking, drinking or even eating chocolate.  Whilst for others it is all about trying something new like taking up a new hobby but for most of us it is all about changing something about ourselves.  We often want to make ourselves into something better and healthier than we are currently are.  Consequently January is the peak time for many gyms and health clubs as they see an influx in the number of people who want to join, all in an attempt to stick to their latest resolution and present a new, fitter and healthier person to the world.  However, it must be said that all too often these resolutions last a matter of months if not weeks before the majority of us revert back to old ways.

That is why I personally think the best way to implement a change into your life is through your style.  It is a much simpler and easier way to ensure you achieve the change that you crave so much but requires much less effort than any of the aforementioned activities.

When it comes to style there are many options and roads to go down which will all end in the same result- a different you.  For example you could change your look through the clothes that you wear.  However, to be entirely honest this is not something that can be achieved over night as few people are able to afford a completely new wardrobe all at once.  Rather this is something that needs to be done over time and phased in gradually.

For me the quickest and easiest route to conveying a new look is through your hair.  The simplest of changes to your hairstyle can in fact have the greatest of impacts. For those who always wear their hair straight, why not try adding a bit of texture to your hair by wearing the tousled look, or even opt for curls.  This will add bounce and volume to your hair and as simplistic as the change seems it will definitely deliver results.

For those who crave a much more dramatic effect why not try a change of colour.  However, in this situation a trip to a hair salon is definitely in order.  You need to be sure that the colour you opt for is going to suit you and most hair care professional will be able to help with this matter.  Why not follow in the footsteps of Nicole Richie and go from blonde to brunette.  A beautiful, rich brown tone will complement the winter months perfectly.  However, be warned that only certain skin tones can carry this look off and consequently not all blondes should take this route.

Meanwhile those with long hair might want to consider a shorter do.  Tipped to be a big trend this year is the shaggy bob, and with the likes of Victoria Beckham and Dannii Minogue already sporting the look it is certain to be big.  However, if the word bob has you panicking don’t worry as you can opt for a shoulder length version of this particular style as Jessica Alba and Diane Kruger have.  The shaggy version of the bob adds an extra edge to this particular style, not to mention that it also adds texture and depth to the hair and prevents it from looking lifeless.

For those with short hair who want a change you could perhaps consider hair extensions, but please just not Lady Gaga style hair extensions.  Although you may want to keep your hair short as with stars such as Cheryl Cole ditching their hair extensions it is almost certain that short hair is going to be a big trend this year.

However, we all know that even the simplest of changes to our hair can cause it a great deal damage to it so we need to take care of it.  It is therefore important to invest a little bit of money in good hair care products such as those offered by Louise Galvin as there is little point in having a great hair style if our hair looks dull and lifeless.

So if you have already broken your New Year’s resolution but are still trying to find ways of creating a new you then why not consider a change of hair style?  It is one of the simplest but most effective ways of updating your look and letting people know about it!

Is Homeless Chic Key to Autumn/Winter2010?

So Milan Fashion Week is very much underway and it seems it has gone off with a bang courtesy of Vivienne Westwood.  All eyes were on Milan as the world waited to find out what all the big names in fashion had decided was going to be big for Autumn/Winter in 2010 and I think it would be fair to say that there were plenty of surprises in store for everyone.

The show put on by Vivienne Westwood in which she unveiled her menswear Autumn/Winter 2010 collection, and which took place in the Museo della Permanente, Milan took on a rather unusual theme, and provoked a mixed reaction not only amongst the crowd present at the show but also amongst  people throughout the world.  The clothes presented in the show have been deemed fantastic; meaning this part of the show was a clear success.  However, it is the theme of the show which has been dubbed “homeless chic” that has set tongues wagging and sparked a certain degree of controversy.

Vivienne says that the inspiration for the homeless theme actually came in the form of her husband, Austrian born Andreas Kronthaler, who was in turn inspired by a friend of his who works with a homeless charity.  So you might be wondering just how do you transform a high end fashion show into something which oozes the notion of homeless chic?  Well if you are indeed asking yourself this question and are having trouble imagining how this is done then envisage the following props; cardboard boxes, shopping trolleys and sleeping bags.

This particular Vivienne Westwood show saw male models crawl out of cardboard boxes, whilst others pushed shopping trolleys full of newspaper up and down the catwalk as others opted to have sleeping bags draped over their shoulders.  All of this was done in the aim of making the models appear as though they sleep rough.  What’s more the models presented a somewhat untidy appearance, with their hair giving off a hint of silver.  The silver tinge to the model’s hair was meant to represent frost and further enhance the fact the models were supposed to be homeless.

Although the theme of the show seemed to steal the limelight it is important to note that the aim of the fashion show was to showcase Vivienne’s latest designs and as such it is important not to overlook them.  So based on what was seen on the night it would seem that key trends for menswear in Autumn/Winter 2010 will be layering, chunky jumpers, faux fur coats, oversized jackets and bold prints.  In addition to this Vivienne also unveiled all in one jumpsuits and wide waist trousers.

However, as if the show had not been attention grabbing enough Vivienne Westwood was wheeled out onto the catwalk after the show had finished on a stretcher.  The purpose of this particular stunt is unclear but one thing that is clear is that no one will be forgetting this Vivienne Westwood show anytime soon.

Things are Heating up with Armani and Calvin Klein

Whilst the UK is still recovering from the ice and snow which has plagued the country for weeks now it seems as though things are starting to heat up with the arrival of the advertising campaigns of some of the world’s biggest fashion houses.  The hot and steamy campaigns which signal that the Spring/Summer 2010 lines are just around the corner have certainly chased the winter blues away.

So let’s start with the campaign launched by Emporio Armani, which is soon set to grace billboards up and down the country.  So we are used to seeing both Mr and Mrs Beckham as the brand ambassadors  for this particular fashion house.  However, it would seem that it is all change at Emporio Armani with both David and Victoria being replaced by younger models.  Although it appears that  Armani thinks they are onto a winner featuring a footballer within their campaigns and as such they have replaced David Beckham with another footballer, this time in the form of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Cristiano is now the worldwide face of Emporio Armani underwear in addition to Armani jeans and as such will appear on billboards everywhere as of next month.  However, it has to be said after the stir David Beckham caused whilst undertaking the role, Cristiano had a lot to live up to.  Although from the pictures that were released it is clear to see that Ronaldo certainly has the physique to carry the role off.

Meanwhile, it seems that Victoria Beckham has replaced by one of the beautiful women around.  Star of the Transformers, Megan Fox, was announced as Mrs Beckham’s replacement and if the pictures released are anything to go by there is little doubt that this will be nothing short of an extremely smouldering campaign.

Not to be outdone it seems that Calvin Klein have decided to opt for an equally sizzling hot campaign featuring actress Eva Mendes and model Jamie Dornan.  The duo have proved to be a winning combination in the past and this campaign is set to be so hot that it is sure to leave both men and women worldwide drooling.  The ads which were shot in California by photographer Steven Klein show both Eva and Jamie wearing a pair of Calvin Klein jeans, and little else.

The ad campaign sees both models sporting various items from the Calvin Klein Whitewahsed collection, a body enhancing denim range.   What’s more the range, as the name suggests, the ads highlights the return of the trademark white washed denim look of the eighties.

The new campaign is sure to get many a person hot under the collar but then it is not the first  risqué advert to be released by Calvin Klein and to feature Eva Mendes.  Rather, the television advert for Calvin Klein’s Secret Obsession perfume, which featured Eva, was banned as it was deemed too risqué for television, due to the level of nudity.

So it seems that hot and steamy ads are the order of the day when it comes to these famous fashion houses.  Who was the most successful in delivering that criteria I shall leave that to you to decide.

The New Trend of 2010

So we are well and truly in the New Year.  With everyone back at work and all the excitement of the New Year well and truly behind us, many people are starting to ask the same question- just what is going to be big in 2010?  Well amongst many of the trends emerging from the fashion world it seems that one of the biggest trends is the use of plus size models.

OK I know what you are thinking- haven’t we been here before?  Doesn’t it seem like every year someone comes forward and proclaims that the particular year in question will be the year of the plus sized model?  Don’t they always say this and then once the novelty has worn off all magazines and fashion houses revert back to hiring size zero models?  Well if Mr Lagerfeld himself can do a u turn on the issue of plus sized models then surely there is hope that in fact 2010 is the year for the plus sized woman!

V Magazine has decided to publish a Size issue for the month of January in replace of the normal monthly issue.  The issue will feature several curvaceous women modelling a multitude of outfits and designs.  What’s more the voluptuous models will not be wearing baggy, loose fitting clothes.  Rather they will be wearing exactly the same types of outfits we would expect any standard model to wear, so look out for swimwear, bra tops and low rise jeans, highlighting that plus size fashion does not have to be dull and boring.  But what is even more incredible is the fact Karl Lagerfeld has actually played a role in the production of this special edition of V Magazine.  Mr Lagerfeld oversaw a photo shoot of burlesque dancer and plus size woman Dirty Martini, in a range of revealing outfits at Coco Chanel’s house for the Size issue. What is astonishing about this is that just a few months ago Karl famously said that “No one wants to see curvy women. You’ve got fat mothers with their bags of chips sitting in front of the television and saying that thin models are ugly.”

So it seems that Karl Lagarfeld has had a change of heart when it comes to plus size women, so if he can give his seal of approval to use of plus sized women within the media then surely it is more possible that 2010 has the potential to be the year of the plus sized woman!
