Glitz and Glam arrives in the Hosiery Department

October 20, 2009

The focus this season seems to be very much centred on legs! Before last autumn and winter many of us just stuck to our plain, old, boring black opaque tights but last year we saw a bit of a revolution in the hosiery department. Last autumn and winter we saw somewhat of a colour explosion when it came to tights, and coloured tights became a key feature in many a woman’s wardrobe. However, whilst coloured tights are still very much on trend for this autumn and winter this particular look has stepped up a gear.

This season sees the appearance of sparkles, polka dots, checks and a whole host of other patterns on tights. For those are who are a bit intimidated by this trend it is best to start off simple. Perhaps opt for a pair of tights which aren’t too decorative, maybe begin with tights with a polka dot pattern and then progress onto more adventurous styles such as sparkly tights or tights with swirls. It is also advisable to begin by teaming such tights with simpler outfits and then as your confidence grows become bolder with what you wear. However, for those who are a bit more daring there is no reason why you shouldn’t jump straight in with a pair of tights which make a real statement.

Just remember you don’t have to be too radical to pull of this look, if you are new to decorative hosiery then my advice would be to ease yourself in gently. You could perhaps begin by reverting back to last year’s trend, as although it was around last autumn/winter it is still very much in fashion this season too. You could start by wearing a pair of brightly coloured tights, perhaps pink or blue, with a black dress and shoes. Although not too drastic this particular look can have a dramatic impact and has the ability to make even the simplest of outfits pop. Once you feel comfortable and confident in carrying off this look you can then experiment with something a little more bedazzling.

Another notable trend this season in relation to hosiery is stockings. This particular type of hosiery has been worn by celebrities such as Lily Allen, Rihanna and Katy Perry, but to name a few. This particular trend first came to light during Paris Fashion Week and was first classed as somewhat of a fleeting trend, something a few celebs had decided to experiment with but which would never actually take off. However, it seems this initially reaction was somewhat misplaced as since Paris Fashion Week there has been a distinct increase in the number of celebrities and style icons donning this trend. Although it must be said his look is definitely not for the faint hearted and should surely only be attempted by the ultra confident. However, for those who find this look a bit risqué then there is always the possibility of buying tights which have been deliberately designed to look like stockings. Such tights have been favoured by Lily Allen.

So with so many options available the only thing that remains is to decide on your ideal pair of tights or stockings. The great thing about this trend is that is also practical for the winter months, and let’s be honest practical isn’t something that we normally associate with fashion. So it seems like an added bonus that we can not only be on trend this autumn/winter but we can also keep our little legs nice and cosy as well!
